Coffee with a story
Kahawa means coffee in Kiswahili and the Wamama are the Tanzanian women who skillfully hand-roast the coffee beans harvested from premium coffee-growing regions in Tanzania.
Established in 2010 in Dar es Salaam as a micro-roastery and social enterprise.
Wamama Kahawa Coffee Roasters is a social business that was started with the goal of offering freshly-roasted, old-fashioned Tanzanian coffee and enabling dignifying opportunities to unemployed Tanzanian women through fair wage and skills training in the simple but sophisticated art of hand-roasting coffee.
The Wamama Kahawa Specialty Coffee range seeks to promote and support coffee growers who are contributing to environmental sustainability and giving back to their local community. We also seek to support and encourage responsible growing and harvesting of coffee, so as to improve the quality of coffee in Tanzania on the whole. The coffee in our Specialty range is carefully selected by us and meets our criteria for ethical standards as well as quality.
Our House Blend is sourced from small-scale growers in the Kilimanjaro region and is freshly hand-roasted daily using our signature medium-dark roast. At Wamama Kahawa coffee lovers are assured the freshest coffee, hand-roasted with passion and care.
Our Roasting Profiles

Why Hand Roasted
Hand-roasting coffee is an art and a skill which requires the roaster to be extremely sensitive to the transformation of the bean, so as to achieve the best roast suited to the character of the bean.
No mechanised equipment or computers are involved as the coffee beans are roasted in small batches using individual hand-crank roasters, and the coffee roaster’s full effort and attention is engaged in the entire process. Her senses are tuned to precision as it is necessary for her to monitor the colour and size of the beans, smell the aroma of the combustion of sugars, and listen to the sounds made by the coffee bean as it goes through the various stages of roasting, to ensure that the coffee bean is roasted to completion.
Wamama Kahawa coffee is 100% hand-roasted; the labour intensive-ness of the process we use ensures maximum income generating opportunities for the women who roast and pack the coffee
